1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to keep. "Local storage" is a similar store inside your browser. We use both for three purposes: things the site cannot work without, which are always on; measuring how the site is used (analytics); and measuring our own advertising (marketing). The last two are off until you choose otherwise.
2. Your choices
When you first visit, a banner asks whether to allow analytics and marketing cookies. You can accept both, choose "Necessary only", or choose each category separately. Google's tags are not loaded at all until you consent, and withdrawing consent stops them and deletes Google Analytics' cookies from your browser. You can change your choice at any time with "Cookie preferences" in the site footer, or here:
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but the site may not work properly without the necessary ones.
3. Strictly necessary
These are always on, because the site cannot work securely without them. They are set by us, on our own domain.
| Name | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
welike-session |
Keeps you signed in and remembers your session (for example, your language) as you move between pages. | 120 minutes of inactivity |
XSRF-TOKEN |
Protects forms against cross-site request forgery. | 120 minutes of inactivity |
remember_web_β¦ |
Keeps you signed in on this device, only if you tick "Remember me". | 400 days, or until you sign out |
welike_consent |
Remembers your cookie choice, so the banner does not ask again. Your own browser writes it when you choose; our server never sets it. | 180 days |
welike_apple_oauth_state |
A one-time security code used only while you sign in with Apple. | 15 minutes |
Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a form is being filled in by a person, may also set cookies of its own that are needed for that check.
4. Analytics (with your consent)
Set by Google Analytics, through Google Tag Manager on some of our sites, only after you allow analytics. They tell us which pages are used and which are not. Google signals and ad personalisation are switched off, we do not send Google your name, email or account ID, and Google keeps the data for two months.
| Name | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
_ga |
Tells visits from the same browser apart, using a random identifier. | Up to 2 years |
_ga_<ID> |
Keeps track of the current visit. | Up to 2 years |
5. Marketing (with your consent)
Set by Google Ads, only after you allow marketing. They measure whether our own advertising campaigns work, and let
Google show our ads to people who have visited before (remarketing). They are never loaded on your account or settings
pages. Typical names are _gcl_au (up to 90 days) and cookies on Google's own domains, such
as doubleclick.net, which Google controls. See
how Google uses advertising cookies.
6. Other storage in your browser
-
welike:pref:β¦(local storage): small conveniences such as your "near me" location and whether you dismissed the install prompt. Kept only in your browser, and written only after you have made a cookie choice. flux.appearance(local storage): your light or dark theme choice.- A service worker and its cache, if you install the site or use it offline. It stores public pages only, so they open without a connection.
These stay until you clear your browser's site data.
7. More information
Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal information, including what Google receives and your rights under POPIA.
