The Cape Gallery

The Cape Gallery has been on Church Street for decades, dealing in painting, sculpture and graphics by South African artists. Its stated brief is fine art rooted in the African tradition — work that carries the cultural stamp of the continent rather than work that happens to be made here. It handles both established and emerging artists and functions as much as a dealer as a gallery, which means the stock behind the current hang is worth asking about. Church Street is the CBD's densest gallery block. The Cape Gallery opens for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
