Ultraviolet is a newer Shortmarket Street gallery built around contemporary art photography — work that treats the camera as a medium rather than a record. The programme favours photographers taking a position, which makes for shows that argue rather than illustrate.
It also runs framing in-house, which is unusual for a gallery and practical if you are buying: the work can be finished on site rather than sent out. Together with Gallery F down the block, it makes Shortmarket Street the photography address in the Cape Town CBD. Ultraviolet opens for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
